This January, I performed an inspection on this 1967 Toyota 2000GT. The car was one of the catalog cars at the Mecum Kissimmee Auction. This is a very nice car that has a solid history. The car has been restored and still presents itself very well. The estimate on the car was $800,000 to $1,000,000 which was within the range of the current market. The car was bid short of the auction estimate and will be at Mecum’s Monterey auction in August.
This car was is one of only 62 examples that were made for the US market, with only 351 examples built worldwide from 1967 to 1970. These were actually built by Yamaha for Toyota. The design was state of the art at the time. The cars featured a spine chassis, wishbone suspension, 2.0L inline 6 that was fitted with a aluminum head, and forged pistons. The interior has beautiful gauges, rosewood dash, and a mahogany steering wheel. The designers were targeting Porsche 911, Jaguar E-Type, and the other top European sports cars of the day. Carroll Shelby successfully campaigned 3 of the cars in SCCA events in the states, and a roadster version on the car was used in the 1967 James Bond movie, You Only Live Twice.
