Expert Auto Appraisals performed a pre purchase inspection on this 1969 De Tomaso Mangusta in Tampa, FL. This was the subject of an older restoration and now showing some age. Overall, I found the example to be a sound car with original engine and transaxle that ran and drove well. However, my clients end game was to return the car to original specifications and finishes. As a result, this was car that a proper restoration could return the vehicle to a high quality example. My services did assist with my client putting a deal together with the selling dealer.
De Tomaso made only 401 Mangusta’s over a three year run. About 250 of the cars came to the US market. De Tomaso built the US market cars with a 302 and a 5 Speed ZF Transaxle. Similarly, a more potent 289 was fitted into the the European market cars. Interestingly, De Tomaso built one car equipped with a Chevrolet motor built for General Motors Executive, Bill Mitchell. It is believed through the registries that follow the cars, that approximately 250 of these cars exist today. I have had the good fortune of appraising and inspecting several of these remaining examples. When going thru the paperwork work on this car, I found this from cartoonist Charles Schultz.
