I traveled to Tampa, FL to perform a pre purchase inspection on this 1969 De Tomaso Mangusta. This was car that had been restored in the past, and the restoration was not to original specifications. The restoration was now showing some age, but the car was sound, and certainly could be taken back to a high quality example through restoration. The car had its original engine and transaxle, but like many De Tomaso cars, had a customized look. The car was a good running and driving car, however my clients end game was to return the car to original specifications and finish. I did assist with my client putting a deal together with the selling dealer. De Tomaso made only 401 Mangusta’s over a three year run. About 250 of the cars came to the US market. The US cars were equipped with a 302 and a 5 Speed ZF Transaxle, while the European market cars were equipped with a more potent 289. One car was equipped with a Chevrolet motor built for General Motors Executive, Bill Mitchell. It is believed through the registries that follow the cars, that approximately 250 of these cars exist today. I have had the good fortune of appraising and inspecting several of these remaining examples. When going thru the paperwork work on this car, I found this from cartoonist Charles Schultz.
