We recently performed a Pre Purchase Inspection on this 1969 Mercedes 280SL for a California client. The car was on eBay and being sold by a dealer located in Central Florida. This was a great example of a why to have a Pre Purchase Inspection performed before making a remote purchase. This was a nice looking car in the photos that were published online. The photos included several pictures of the under carriage, all painted black and appearing free of any concerns. Our inspection quickly found the car to be in a different condition than represented. This was a car that had a generous use of spray paint in the engine compartment and the under carriage. The problems were much larger than the spray paint. What the spray paint was covering was large amounts of filler in holes in floor pans and large areas of rot within the cars chassis. Look at closely at one of the photos below. You’ll that spray used on the under carriage all over the arms of the lift indicating a regular practice by the selling dealer. Also, notice the missing gas cap.
