I traveled to Mexico City, Mexico to inspect this 1969 Renault Alpine Dinalpin. It was an adventure to say the least and getting the deal closed and the car out of Mexico proved to be a challenge. On this assignment, I coordinated the payment, closing of the deal, removal of the car simultaneously, and ultimately the import of the car into the US and ship the car to my client who was scuba diving on a Caribbean Island during the deal. It wasn’t an easy deal, and I found it rather difficult to move the car to the US border. I really feel that if I wasn’t there onsite, the car would still be in Mexico today.
The Alpine A110 was a great looking little car that was produced in France, Spain, Bulgaria, Mexico, and Brazil. The French built cars were the majority. The car has an English name an Italian designed body by Michelotti. This example was a Mexico produced car under the name of Dinalpin. A few hundred of the cars were built by Dinalpin. An approximate total production of Alpine’s is 10,000 units, the last being built in 1978.
These were all built on a Spine type chassis, rear engined, with a 5 speed transaxle. The body was fiberglass and the combination proved to be incredibly successful as rally cars. An A110 won the Monte Carlo rally in 1971 and in 1973 won the WRC manufactures championship winning 6 of 13 events in the hand of 4 different drivers. These are really not well known in the US, but a great looking small package that handles like its on rails and power that is suitable for its light weight. I love the racing seats, crinkle finish dash, and integrated roll bar.
