My examination proved this was a high-quality example of the Porsche 930, finished in Paint-to-Sample Mercedes-Benz Caledonia Green with a Brown full leather interior. This Porsche was a low mileage example with a numbers-matching engine. This car’s overall condition, low mileage, paint to sample, and Sports Seats, collectively played a role in this car’s impressive result at the auction. Gooding & Co. cataloged this car with an auction estimate of $350,000 to $450,000. Gooding & Co. sold this 930 for $478,000, including the buyer’s premium.
The Porsche 930 was an impressive car of its time. In 1978, Porsche continued the evolution an already great car, improving performance in all categories. For example, Porsche upgraded the engine to a 3.3-liter engine, added an intercooler, larger brakes, larger fenders for wider tires, and a new and large “tea-tray” rear spoiler with a small vent opening that draws in more air to the engine. The new US market engine 3.3L produced 261 bhp at 5,500 rpm with the help of an air-to-air intercooler. Only 451 1978 Porsche 930 Turbo were made for the US Market.
