Expert Auto Appraisals performed an inspection on the 1979 BMW M1 in Illinois. I inspected this BMW M1 for a very good client. Giorgetto Giugiaro designed the BMW M1. Unfortunately, BMW was not able to build the cars in time to meet the homolofgation deadline for Group 5. Due to this BMW produced the M1 in a joint effort with Lamborghini to build the cars quickly. The Group 5 Homologation requirements were 400 production . Lamborghini was not able to complete the design and build. Surprisingly, a group of Lamborghini engineers formed Italengineering to complete the final design. Ultimately the production cars were built by BMW Motorsports and were only able to compete in Group 4 due to production delays. In total, 453 examples were produced, 399 production, and balance for motorsports.
