Expert Auto Appraisals performed an inspection on this 1993 Porsche Turbo S Leichtbau in Show Low, Arizona. The vehicle was on a live Bring a Trailer auction. I performed the inspection for a client in the UK. Bring a Trailer sold the car for $970,000 at auction hammer. However my client was not the winning bidder. This was my second visit to this seller’s location to inspect a significant Porsche.
1993 Porsche Turbo S Leichtbau
In the early 1990’s, Porsche was struggling as a manufacture and built several variations of the 964 generation 911 that were special and rare, all desirable today. These included the Carrera RS, RS America, America Roadster, Speedster, 3.6 Turbo, 30th Anniversary, and other. The Turbo S was one of these special variants. Going one step further, Porsche produced the lightweight or Leichtbau Turbo S. In total, Porsche produced only 86 lightweight examples. This car had several features from the Carrera RS to save weight and more. Additionally, the car was visually very similar to the Carrera RS 3.8.
The Leichtbau featured the RS door panels, aluminum doors, lightweight glass, racing bucket seats, composite rear spoiler and carbon fiber hood. Additionally, power steering, air conditioning, radio, sound deadening were deleted. At 2,850 lbs., the Leichtbau was over 400 lbs. lighter than a Turbo S. The engine produced 380 HP. The extra power was due to modified intake runners, more radical cam timing, and upgraded fuel injection and ignition timing, and maximum turbo boost was increased to 1.0 bar. To accommodate special requests, Porsche would allow clients to retain a few comfort features, as with this example which was ordered with AC.
