I performed an inspection of this 2005 Aston Martin Vanquish S, offered by Bonham’s Auction in Scottsdale. The car had an auction estimate of $50,000 to $60,000. Prior to sale, the auction announced a disclosure of an off road event that caused substantial damage. I checked, but the auction had no records of repairs, service history, or ownership. However, the repairs were understood to be substantial. In any event, I proceeded with the inspection and uncovered inconsistencies in the paint and evidence of the prior repairs, however it appeared to be well done.
The Market in Scottsdale
During my inspection of this Aston Martin, while in rear of the car, a group, led by a market expert and writer, approached the car. The market expert was leading an auction tour of selected vehicles, discussing the cars, market, sharing his wisdom and insights. In this case, the wisdom and insight shared was all positive on this one owner, meticulously maintained, perfect original example. He discussed the market and stated it was a steal at the auction estimate and soon to be a $100,000 car.
As I crawled out from under the Aston Martin, paint meter and flashlight in hand, I noticed all of the members of the group had bidder credentials. Later that day, the market expert was right, and the car did become a $100,000 car, right there in Scottsdale. I can only speculate that his inspirational speech may have influenced one or two of the bidders he was addressing. The moral of the story is, inspect the car, the paperwork, the history, or have me do it for you.
