I performed an appraisal inspection on this 1968 Ferrari 206GT that was offered at the Gooding & Co. auction during the Scottsdale Arizona Auction Week in 2015. This was an unrestored car, perhaps to fault, that was a great candidate for a restoration. These are alloy bodied cars, and are as expensive as anything to restore. The car was complete and had the original engine and gearbox. I will note that the gearbox number was a tricky one to get while on the ground. Note that the engine and gearbox numbers are within one digit of each other. The pictures below aren’t to pick on the car, but to give you a good idea what $400,000 gets you in the 206GT market. My client was the under bidder on the car which was hammered sold at $380,000, netting an all in price of $418,000. These are awesome cars that have great lines, mid engine, alloy body, rarity, etc. This example is one of just 152 examples built in 1968 and 1968. It sure does look nice on the block under this auction lights.
In this car, the appraisal valuation and condition inspection were being used, and ultimately tested in real time, for real money. Having a comprehensive understanding of the vehicles value, condition, and authenticity is very important in determining an expert opinion of value.
