1979 Porsche 928

1979 Porsche 928 Inspection Houston

VIN 9289201429
Engine Number 8291095
Transaxle Number 1182190

On a trip to Houston, Texas late last year, I found this 1979 Porsche 928 at a location while inspecting at an early Porsche 3.0L 930 Turbo. In the garage, there were few other cars and I asked if anything was for sale. I was told this 928 that was quietly sitting in the corner is going to come to market soon. The owner started tell me about it and I took a quick look and realized this appeared to be a very nice car. The seller stated it was original paint and I didn’t see any signs, but it looked nice enough either way. The business of the day was the 930 that left us out of time that afternoon and made arrangements to stay an extra day to accommodate a more in depth inspection of the car the following morning. The seller, a great guy, had the car ready on a lift, just as the day prior for the 930. I was very impressed with the originality and condition of the under carriage. Everything was good, real good, and what really impressed me was how honest and original it was. We then got the car outside and I started looking for the paintwork that I was certain I would find. Why not? I find it on nearly every “Original Paint” car I look at. To my surprise and pleasure, the paint was original, with a few minor flaws, but real good. The paint finish has been polished. I think the only flaw with paint is that it has lost quite a bit of it’s original texture due to these efforts. I think I found that the front bumper was redone. The next thing that impressed me was the interior. It was fantastic. I couldn’t believe how good it was. The driver seat lower was redone, but the dash, headliner, rear seats, door panels, carpets, switches, knobs, all of it was great, and most importantly original, with the exception of the seat bottom. The tools were never touched. The spare bulbs still in the pack. The engine compartment was fantastic. The platings and finishes were in excellent condition. Everything was well sorted. The next step was the drive and that was as good if not better than the rest of the car. There had a recent belt and water pump service just performed. The end of the story, we put a deal together, and had it all wrapped up that afternoon. In summary, it’s a great car that has characteristics that are rarely found at any level in the collector car world.

I think the standout of this car was it was in a condition that is rarely found with the most significant Porsche cars of the day. Because of the market over the last couple of years, I have performed inspections on at least 200 Porsche’s, most of them 930’s / Turbo’s. Only a few cars had this type of presentation and originality. If you’re looking for an investment quality Porsche from the 70’s, this car deserves strong consideration. Early 928’s are starting to move, and this is a great example. I have included several pictures that were taken during my inspection last December. There is also a gallery at the bottom of the page with several measurement of paint on every panel.

This car is now available for sale and is offered by my fiends at M. Brandon Motorcars in Houston, TX.
Here’s a link to the car on the dealer’s website.
